Sean just informed me that our Anime Boston 2008 panel was waitlisted. Our panel, titled “Cowboy Bebop - Anime’s Outstanding Ambassador,” is probably not the most standout application, but I hope the organizers will still give us the opportunity to present something that should interest both experienced connoisseurs and newcomers to the material.
For those of you that haven’t seen or heard of Cowboy Bebop, it’s generally regarded as one of best anime around. In addition to having incredible plot, animation and character design, it was the first series to fascinate me musically. For myself and many others, the soundtrack is a gateway drug into the eclectic world of Yoko Kanno, whose work has in turn led me to investigate so many other talented musicians, including Steve Conte, Akino Arai and Origa.
We’ll prepare our presentation, and even if we don’t get accepted into Anime Boston this year, I think the experience of sitting down with my friends to watch Cowboy Beboy again and discussing the themes, art and music will be a rewarding exercise in itself. With fewer interesting programs on TV these days <insert_generic_writers_strike_complaints/>, it’ll be a welcome change from CSI reruns.

I downloaded a few Origa albums after finishing season two of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. I have to confess, she’s quite good. Then again, hers is the only Russian music I’ve ever really listened to. They play a fair bit of international music on the Japanese radio stations, but it tends to be a mix of English, Korean and Chinese.
